PRIOR TO OZONE GENERATOR TREATMENT
Test the generator to ensure that it is operating properly by:
-
Making sure that the fan(s) are operating and air is blowing out of the top.
-
Listen for the sparking of the ozone plates generating the ozone.
-
You should be able to smell the ozone scent within 5 seconds of turning the generator on.
-
Check the plates to make sure they are glowing (easier to see in a darkened room).
Odor can be an indicator of the level of pollutants in an area. Identifying and eliminating the source of the problem is necessary before treatment, or the problem, can re-occur:
-
Identify and eliminate the source of moisture in mold / mildew situations. Install a moisture barrier or a dehumidifier when applicable.
-
Identify and eliminate the source of the VOCs causing an odor.
-
Identify and remove decomposing organic material.
Repeating ozone treatments may be necessary to fully address an issue.
OZONE TREATMENT PROTOCOLS: DAILY DISINFECTION & SHOCK TREATMENTS
-
Ozone Generators are designed for indoor use only, operate in a dry environment only. Always read the manual before operating any electrical device.
-
Close off and secure the area being treated, shutting all doors and windows. Allowing some outside air (crack a window) to feed the unit with "fresh" oxygen will improve the unit's performance. The outside air will not reduce the effectiveness of the ozone generator treatment, as the gas will still concentrate and build potency. Remember, the ozone machine does require oxygen to generate ozone, a fresh supply of outside air is helpful.
-
Post signage warning outsiders from entering the area while the ozone generator is in use.
-
ALL People, Pets, and Plants must be vacated from the area during the treatment.
-
The gas must have unobstructed access to every surface, therefore, it is recommended that all internal doors, cabinets, drawers, etc. are left open, so the gas will flow freely.
-
The output of the ozone generator improves in lower humidity environments. Drying out the space prior to treatment, will extend the life of the unit.
-
Because ozone is heavier than air, it may be necessary to elevate the ozone machine to ensure adequate gas distribution.
-
In larger areas, treatments can be enhanced by utilizing fans to help circulate the gas. In buildings, central HVAC systems on "fan mode" will also aid in the distribution of the gas, while sanitizing the system ducts.
DAILY DISINFECTION TREATMENTS (see Disinfect Daily Tab for more details)
-
Locate the SanusAer Ozone Generator in the center of the space.
-
Elevate the generator if possible
-
Keep away from materials that can block generator's input/output
-
Keep away from flammable materials
-
Set the timer for 1 - 2 hours maximum (suggest starting at midnight).
-
Make sure generator is off a minimum of 3 - 4 hours before re-entry.
-
No People, Pet, or Plants can be in the treatment area while running the generator.
OZONE TREATMENTS
-
DO NOT run the ozone generator constantly, instead, using the timer, cycle the ozone machine on and off (see the guidelines below) to allow for the most effective treatment. Stronger odors require more treatment time however, every situation is different*:

AFTER OZONE GENERATOR TREATMENT
-
When you return to an area after an ozone treatment, you'll detect the aroma of "ultra fresh” air, free from any mal-odors.
-
Many have described this "ultra fresh" smell as the fragrance of cloths that have just come off an outdoor clothes line. Others have described it as the smell of the ocean, or the air after a thunderstorm.
-
Ozone is created during lightening strikes in a thunderstorm and the waves of the ocean and is nature’s way of cleaning the environment. Ozone Generators create the same result by bringing the power of Mother Nature to bear on indoor air pollution.
-
The fresh air aroma, a pleasant benefit of an ozone shock treatment, will usually dissipate within a few days. What remains are the odors of the natural wood, slate, stone or other building materials. The treatment safely eliminates the unpleasant odors, allergens, biological pollutants and VOCs.
-
Oils from the skin can leave a residue on hard surfaces (such as a kitchen table). These oils will be attacked by the ozone, which will oxidize them, and leave the surface "tacky." The same can be said for TV remotes, or cabinet handles, literally any high contact items. They can be cleaned with warm soapy water to remove this tack.
-
Though ozone is a gas that is more than 1,000 times more powerful than Chlorine bleach, it is a green technology that leaves no chemical residues behind.
WHAT IS OZONE?
GREEN TECHNOLOGY:
Ozone is activated oxygen, with three oxygen atoms instead of the two found in the air we breathe. It is nature’s built-in purification system created by the waves of the ocean, lightening in a thunderstorm, and the rain forests. It serves to reduce pollution naturally. Of course, it is also plays a role as a protective layer in the upper atmosphere, (more specifically the stratosphere), that filters out the ultraviolet radiation from the sun, preventing most of it from reaching the earth’s surface. On the earth's surface, ozone has a half-life of about twenty minutes, meaning that one of the three oxygen molecules is unstable and seeks to combine with either another free oxygen molecule or a pollutant that will be ‘oxidized’ or destroyed. Continue to read more about the powers of ozone generators below.
THE POWERS OF OZONE GENERATORS
The powers of ozone were first used in an industrial application in a drinking water plant built at Oudshoom, Holland in 1893. It is also used to purify all bottled water today, and to sanitize fruits and vegetables. As one of the earth’s strongest oxidants, nature uses ozone to purify the outdoors. Now SanusAer® harnesses that same power for use indoors. Partner with nature to safely disinfect, deodorize, and destroy the sources that poison the indoors.
OZONE SAFETY
IMPORTANT OZONE GENERATOR SAFETY GUIDELINES:
-
For use in UNOCCUPIED and SECURED space, NO People, NO Pets and NO Plants.
-
For use by adults only. Never allow children to operate the ozone generator.
-
Over-exposure to ozone can cause mucous membrane and respiratory irritation.
-
Those with asthma or other upper respiratory illnesses, will be more sensitive to ozone.
-
For added safety, we recommend all users wear a carbon filter, chemical vapor respirator mask. (P95/N95 or greater rating) while entering / exiting the treatment area.
RECOMMENDED FOR ADDED SAFETY
-
Ozone Generator must be off for 3 - 4 hours before re-entry into treatment area. If there is still a strong sanitizing smell upon re-entry, check the unit to ensure that it is off and ventilate the area until the ozone gas is gone.
-
Never operate the ozone machine near water or around flammable liquids. Because the generator uses an electrical spark to create ozone, it should not be used around explosive gases or flammable objects.
-
Never service the ozone generator yourself, except to clean or replace the Ozone Transformer Plate Pak(s). Doing so, may void the warranty.
-
Although safe for use around food and electronics, remove all treasured art work or valuables from the treatment area (e.g. oil paintings). If exposed for long periods of time, natural rubber will degrade.
-
Recommend posting signage during treatments to warn individuals to not enter.
-
Odor can be an indicator of the level of pollutants in an area.
-
Identifying and eliminating the source of the problem is necessary before treatment, or the problem, can re-occur:
-
Identify and eliminate the source of moisture in mold / mildew situations. Install a moisture barrier or a dehumidifier when applicable.
-
Identify and eliminate the source of the VOCs causing an odor.
-
Identify and remove decomposing organic material.
-
Repeat ozone machine treatments may be necessary to fully address an issue.
THE ADVANTAGES OF OZONE GENERATORS
WHAT OZONE GENERATORS CAN AND CANNOT DO
Ozone Generators are a Green Solution to many problems. Ozone is perfect for broad-based Odor Removal, Disinfection, Allergen Elimination, and Fire, Flood & Mold Remediation. Below we will share with you the Pros and Cons of Ozone Generators:
WHAT OZONE GENERATORS CAN DO
-
Odor Removal: Because it is a strong oxidant, ozone will attack unpleasant odors (e.g. from smoke, cooking, mildew, pets, and etc.) at their source, cleaving the long chain molecules responsible and permanently eliminating the smell.
-
Mold Remediation: Ozone is lethal to molds, including toxigenic, black mold, etc. Ozone will eliminate mold and mildew odor and make it safer for the removal process.
-
Sanitization: As a gas, ozone is a broad based sanitizer capable of eliminating biological pollutants such as bacteria, viruses, and fungi, thus maintaining microbiological control.
-
Allergen Elimination: Dust mites, pollen, and other allergens cannot survive an indoor ozone shock treatment, bringing immediate relief to allergy sufferers.
-
Natural Disasters: Ozone has been used to remediate indoor environments impacted by floods, tornados, wild fires, and earthquakes.
-
Chemical Pollutants: VOCs such as benzene, formaldehyde, methylene chloride, and others will be oxidized and destroyed by ozone, one of nature's most powerful oxidizing agents.
-
Commercial Agriculture: There are many applications for ozone in agriculture, especially related to odor control and broad based disinfection for disease control.
WHAT OZONE GENERATORS CANNOT DO
-
Remove Dead Mold: Ozone shock treatments will kill any mold; however, the dead mold still must be physically removed, since even dead mold can be allergenic. Additionally, the moisture source in the building must be eliminated to prevent reoccurrence.
-
Create a Pest Control Barrier: Ozone shock treatments will drive may insects / pests out of a building; however, there is no residual effect to prevent reoccurrence.
-
Remove Carpet Stains: Ozone shock treatments will eliminate the chemical and biological pollutants in carpets; however, it will not eliminate a stain.
-
Replace Dry Cleaning: Ozone shock treatments will sanitize clothing, bedding, and window coverings; however, professional dry cleaning may be required to remove visible residue.
-
Mitigate Radon Issues: Ozone shock treatments will oxidize radon gas; however, because the gas continually forms in the soil underneath the property, actual mitigation strategies are required.
